Administration turns down a request for aid after the toxic train derailment.
After the derailment of a Norfolk Southern train in East Palestine, Ohio, on February 3 and the ensuing burning of toxic chemicals, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine requested disaster assistance from the federal government.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said on Thursday that the situation was not eligible for disaster assistance from the federal government to help the community recover. According to a spokesman for the governor, “FEMA did not believe the incident qualified as a traditional disaster, such as if it had been a tornado or hurricane, where assistance is generally provided.“
A FEMA spokesperson said, “FEMA is in constant contact with the emergency operations center in East Palestine and with the Ohio Emergency Management Agency. We are closely coordinating with EPA, HHS, and the CDC, who are helping to test water and air quality and to conduct public health assessments.”
Despite assurances being made to the townspeople that the water and air are safe, experts have cast doubt on those reports.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Administrator Deanne Criswell as she heads FEMA.
- For Governor DeWine as he oversees disaster recovery efforts in the wake of the burning of toxic chemicals.
- For the people who live and work in the impacted regions.
